Learn how to analyze your enterprise & implement solutions using EA modeling techniques

EA models are used to create forecasts used for IT planning. Architects use the EA model to look at how technology is being used in the company currently, how the company structure supports the use of information technology, and the ways in which information technology could be better integrated. The model supports analysis which can be used to determine if, for example, the acquisition of a new computer system is compatible with the stated goals and needs of the company.

The EA model is also used to improve business organization and strategic decision making. By providing a complete picture of the entire organization, enterprise modeling allows companies to see how their systems can be refined to counter external threats, better meet goals, and eliminate internal inefficiencies. The model can improve management techniques, help develop better procedures, and improve long term quality for the business.

Enterprise Models can also be used to look to the future, evaluating the changing relationship of a company and its competitive environment. This type of enterprise modeling can help decision making about what types of products the company could develop to expand, how the market will change, and how to ease the expansion of the company through efficiency and foresight.

Understand the Federal Enterprise Architectural Framework (FEAF)

The Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF) is an enterprise architectural framework for the federal government managed in part by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Its intent is to provide a common methodology for information technology (IT) acquisition, use, and dispersal in the federal government. Intended to be used by all agencies of the federal government, it is also of considerable interest to federal vendors, contractors and federally regulated industries.

We will investigate the three core principles of the FEA strategic direction. They are:

  • IT should be business-driven
  • Framework should be proactive and collaborative across the federal government
  • A belief that a coordinated architecture will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of government information resources
