ASPE SDLC Curriculum Areas

Business requirements are the needs which a project’s result must ultimately fulfill. Because many resources are required to complete most projects, clearly defining requirements at the beginning of the effort is the most critical ingredient in project success. Business analysts are responsible for defining and managing requirements. Never an easy role, requirements engineering is equal parts science and art.

“Agile” methods refer to a specialized (and highly useful) model of software development. Agile methods are high-octane, fast-paced methodologies which enable the completion of systems/software projects in shorter timeframes than conventional "waterfall" methods allow, without sacrificing quality. Decades of development heritage have given rise to these methods, and Agile expertise is becoming increasingly sought after.

Project management is the business of spearheading, coordinating, and ensuring the success of project efforts. Because today’s projects are so complex and expensive, success in this area is exceedingly elusive. A vast body of knowledge has evolved around the ability to do this job effectively. ASPE’s project management expertise is aligned with the Project Management Institute (PMI), the global standards body for project management knowledge.

Software testing is the phase of a project during which a team “proves” the product is truly practical and successful at meeting the needs for which it’s intended. Rigorous and thorough testing means the difference between wasted effort and success, but complexity and time/budget constraints add difficulty. A recent NIST study estimated that software bugs cost the US over 59 billion dollars annually, most of which is preventable through more effective testing. Learn how with training from ASPE
